Pre-Owned vs. New General Aviation Market Trends: What You Need to Know

Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a private pilot upgrading your aircraft, understanding the current landscape of general aviation (GA) is critical. From post-COVID supply chain slowdowns to changing financing dynamics, the choice between buying new or pre-owned comes with different pros, cons, and timing considerations. Here’s a breakdown of what you need to know about the current market.

The Post-COVID Shift

Since COVID-19, demand for general aviation surged, driven largely by travelers seeking greater flexibility. However, OEMs are still recovering from pandemic-era production slowdowns, and lead times for new aircraft remain long—often stretching several years. As a result, many buyers turned to the pre-owned market, pushing up demand and driving prices higher. Now, as we move through 2025 and into 2026, that demand—and pricing—is beginning to correct, though the Luxury Tax continues to bolster interest in pre-2022 aircraft.

New vs. Pre-Owned: What’s Driving Buyer Behavior?

While the appeal of a factory-new aircraft is always strong, limited availability has made it a long-term plan rather than a quick solution. Buyers who need an aircraft now are turning to the used market—especially for popular GA models like Cessna 182s, A185Fs, and T206Hs.

Even so, the market is not uniform. Pre-owned prices are beginning to stabilize or soften, especially in models with increased availability. For example, we’ve seen more T206H inventory in recent months, leading to more cautious, selective buyers. In contrast, well-maintained 182s still move quickly when priced correctly.

Inventory: Still Uneven

Aircraft availability continues to vary widely by model. Some segments are flush with options—like the 185F and T206H—while others remain tight. Buyers looking for specific mission profiles may still face challenges locating a suitable aircraft without overpaying.

Price Trends: Correction in Progress

After steep price increases during 2020–2023, we’re finally seeing some softening. This is especially true in markets where inventory has increased. Sellers should take note: buyers today are more value-conscious. In many cases, if the aircraft isn’t priced according to its condition, it will sit.

Financing & Insurance Realities

Financing continues to be a hurdle, especially for aircraft under $1 million. First-time buyers often struggle to find financing that aligns with their budget. In Canada particularly, lenders have tightened their requirements and now expect formal, accredited appraisals instead of estimates from blue book or Vref sources.

Buyer Expectations: A Split Approach

Today’s market includes two kinds of buyers:

  1. Those seeking a turn-key aircraft with modern avionics, recent paint, and fresh interiors.
  2. Those who prefer a solid airframe priced accordingly, which they can customize post-purchase.

Either way, complete logbooks, transparent records, and a clean airworthiness history are essential. While many sellers ask whether upgrades will increase value, we advise against investing in aesthetics unless it impacts airworthiness. Instead, focus on clean records, updated maintenance, and proof the aircraft has flown regularly.

Airside Insights

From what we’ve seen in the field, today’s GA buyer is more cautious. They want to see full logbooks, damage-free history, and minimal complexity in the deal structure. In many cases, buyers walk away from deals that involve red flags or overly complicated ownership histories.

They’re still willing to pay—but only if the process is smooth and the aircraft justifies the price.

Final Thoughts

The new GA market is still supply-limited, while the pre-owned space is correcting—but not crashing. If you’re shopping today, understand your mission, know your financing limits, and be prepared to move quickly on quality aircraft. We continue to emphasize that the best money you can spend is on a thorough pre-buy inspection and a detailed review of logs and maintenance history.
